TAMS Math Competition
Permalink

Hi.

It's been a while since i've looked here, since tams doesn't do UIL. Hope you all are doing good.

so it seems that for the past four years, tams math club execs have wanted to host a tams math competition, very similar in format to the rice competition. They would have tests in calculus, pre-calculus, algebra, and advanced topics (and probably a few i'm forgetting).

now the problem with this is that for the past four years such a tournament has never been held. this year, we actually got to send out the letters of invitation (the first time such progress has ever been made), but not enough people responded .

So, the question is, would you guys like to attend such a competition? When would be a good date? What changes would you like to see made?

Maybe next year we'll actually have a competition.

Are Tamsters going to form teams to participate in the contest, too? If so, that explains why not many people has responded.

Levity aside, I would love to be in such a competition. Maybe Brad and Zack and I will be able to consummate our superteam dream. But Dallas (or is it at the north of it even) is quite spatially daunting. Zack has his 35, Brad can take 45, I... don't know. It'd take me at least 7 hours just to drive there. By air it might cut 1/4 or the time, but the fare will go up exponentially.

Gravity aside, I would love to be in such a competition.

Best Wishes

Yeah, that does seem kind of crazy for you Sam. Denton is a 3 hr drive for me, which would mean leaving at 5 to make an 8 AM starting time. Hmm. Maybe we'll get a hotel room in Denton or something. Well, we got plenty of time to figure out how we would get there...

Vinay, have the contest be imbetween District and Regionals, or Regionals and State, so that it wont conflict with other UIL contests. Also make sure that you directly contact schools like LBJ in Austin, O'conner, La Joya, Klien, Klien Oak or A&M Consolidated. Thats where you're gonna get some competition, I would think. Also, don't be afraid to advertise on the UIL tournement page, as well as Texasmath and other big websites for Texas mathematics. You might even think about trying to get people from OK to come or something. Be creative! jk

Anyways, I really do hope yall host a math and science contest. I've been wanting to visit some people in TAMS anyway. Not to mention, I need a to go to a good math competition this year as well

hmm, interesting. I don't think we ever considered having a tournament in spring.

The original tournament was scheduled for december 2nd. From the amount of envelopes we stuffed, I'm sure your schools got the invites, lol. I think the execs of math club decided to give up this year and to let us try to get one next year. I'm not sure if a spring contest would work, but i'll certainly find out.

So back to the original plan of having a contest sometime around december next year. Would you guys still be interested?

Please keep responding, your feedback is great.

If we are talking about next year, I have to consider it as an outsider then because I and Zack are both senior and will be outta here.

I think it's a great idea. I seems that all the math competitions have limited themselves in the first half of the year--things start to heat up after New Year and wind down to IMO in early July. It would be certainly nice to have one in late astronomical autumn, and I bet if organized well it's going to be a major event and a grand way to start off the season. Lazy bums like me who hibernate for 6 months after UIL State would actually wake up earlier.

There might be a reason that all the contests are squeezed into second semester, and I might be ignorant of it. Nevertheless, I totally support the idea.

Have the most WONDERFUL NEW YEAR with my

Best Wishes
