To both of you: Stay passionate. Next year you both will rock. I know it. I feel for you Langris. You will really have to work hard to keep up. That is what happened to me. The people who scored 1st (me), 2nd, and 3rd at state were all in the same region!!! And there was 2 other people just as good as us who got 4th and 5th at regionals. I just got lucky both days. You will never get over the nervousness though. Sorry to let you in on that secret.
Langris: Don't let being out of the competitions stop you from practicing. That goes for calc as well as NS. You must practice to stay in beat with a tough district and regionals.
Sam: Good luck at state. I have been studying Larry's tests. I am really good at noticing trends. He will make the state test HARD. It will not be an easy one. The first ten questions will be somewhat difficult to try to throw you off balance. Take your time on those. Get them right first, then use your speed. That's my advice. A good way of practicing speed for me was to take a test and do it all mentally. One problem at a time. In other words, don't even write down the answers. Just think them. And also, think in regular numbers. If you see a problem like 48 x 11 think 528 not 825 backwards. It's a good way to get your mind focused. At least it was for me. And yes, take some tests before the competition. It will get you in the right mindset. Your heart will be pumping miles a second, so you have to use your mind and set your emotions aside. That's easier said than done. If you get an easy problem wrong, you have to forget about it. Also easier said than done.
Looking at the regional scores, I would say either A LOT of people choked or the test was much harder than anticipated. I am voting on the first. So remember accuracy will get you more points than speed and a higher position. Wow. You have so much going for you. You are only a sophmore. What I wouldn't give to have been in your position when I was there.
