New Methods Needed For Site
Permalink

Okay! Congratulation to everyone who made it to state!!!!

It is almost that time again to update the website to include all of the new tricks and methods that we have seen on this years tests. Not only this, but I have run across several tricks that are not in the site. Basically, I need your help to give me the ideas on what needs to be added or possibly changed (there are quite a few errors in the site!). Let me know of all the changes that need to be made. My computer crashed so it is going to be hard for me to update it, but I will find a way!!!!

Thanks again guys (or gals).

well, here are all the tricks i think should be added... but what do i know?

feet/second to miles/hour

percent with the repeating 3's and 6's

   e.g. 15% OF 833 1/3 IS

taking the sum of fibonacci-like sequences

adding three fractions in this form

  11/15 + 11/21 + 11/28

   i think it's like a/(n(n+2)) + a/(n(n+4)) + a/(n+1)(n+4) ?

taking pi and e to irrational powers

squaring three digit numbers

fractions like 67/81 - 17/20 -- I had no idea how to do this at state, i spent about 30 seconds just staring at it, trying to come up with an answer

Approximating three square roots times each other , like sqrt(327) * sqrt (397) * sqrt (487)

the fraction equations - like (x-4) / 6 + (x-5) / 5 = x/30

that's all i can think of

bye,

vinay

I agree with Vinay, all of those problems were pretty unique to this year, and probably have better approaches than most people take.

OK, so , which ones do we know the tricks for?

feet/second to miles/hour --- multiply by 22/15, or 15/22, depending on the converstion

percents with the repeating 3's and 6's --- many ways of doing this

sum of fibonacci-like sequences --- multiply the seventh term by 11

adding three fractions in the form 11/15+11/21+11/28 --- 3*numerator/(middle denominator minus one)

fractions like 67/81 - 17/20 --- usually its a/b - (an-1)/(bn+1), and the form is

(a+b)/b(bn+1) ;  this time it's negative,

squaring three-digit numbers; i guess i meant like 808^2, so it's just 652864; don't really know how to explain it, but you get it hopefully;

if it was 518 squared, then just do it like you'd square a number in the 50s, so, 268324

So that leaves three that I think are still haven't found maybe the best methods for---

taking pi and e to irrational powers - i guess just memorize pi^e, e^pi, etc. ?

fraction equations - any trick, or just cross-multiply and solve?

approximating three square roots times each other --- no idea

any suggestions?

vinay
