Just got back from district. I was horribly sick. I had to go vomit 21 questions into the number sense test. I came back and pleaded the judges to let me have the 6 or so minutes I missed, but no. As I waited outside the verifacation room I sam them circle my name... I placed 4th, but luckily the tricks and advice that I gave my team (the day before I outlined Leo's book for them) allowed them to take the top three spots... I scored a 78. Please laugh at this number. Now. In science, I only did the bio section and got a 44. (insert more trips to the bathroom here) In social studies, I scored an 88 and got 1st place. It was strange... I was so completely fatalistic at this point that I Bs'ed the perfect essay, and beat the second place guy, (also from my team) by .7 points. Now that my sad story of how I am advancing to region in 2 events has thoroughly bored you, I want to know how April foolz of Diztrikt 2-izzle did. Include everything that glorifies you.
Well at least you're going to regionals in SOMETHING after literally throwing up during the competitions. And while you're at Regionals, why not show up at the Number Sense event anyway just in case one of your teammates decides to pull a throw up routine like you did... when I was a Junior I missed advancing to Regionals by one point (yes I thought about that one every day until the next year's District competition!), but I showed up anyway at the Regionals event (along with a teammate of mine who advanced) just in case one of the others weren't available. However in my case everyone showed up so I could not compete - they wouldn't even let me take the test with them! But hey, I still had a good time that weekend.
So they only let the 3 best from your team compete, even if your team advances? Whoa... I thought I could at least compete... They let me compete last year in social studies when my team swept district 1-4 (I was the 4th) at region, and then again at state even though I only got 7th in region. I really hope I can compete... I know I could have at least pulled a 180 had I another 5 minutes... I usually kill in problems 30-45, but I never got to them. My performance in the first 21 still surprises me though, I usually NEVER miss things there, but somehow I missed 3... Argh!!! I guess I'll get another chance soon enough. See you all 4A'ers at region IV. 3 weeks...
I assume the rules are they still advance only 1st - 3rd place from each District to Regionals - right? However if I placed 4th I'd go (especially if one of your school team members was going) and ask the coaches whether I can compete.
Going to regionals is fun - when I was in high school we always drove to the fall & early spring competitions in the morning & drove back the same day, so we never stayed in hotels. Regionals was different in that we arrived the night before & spent the night in the hotel preparing for the event - I remember having the feeling that night that Number Sense was my 'career' - too bad there aren't many paying jobs around directly requiring the use of Number Sense tricks.
I'm pretty sure that all four members of a team get to compete at regionals. Also, I'm pretty sure that you are qualified to compete in the individual at regionals because your team advanced.
As top team I bet you will be allowed to compete at regionals. I graduated back in 1987 and when I was a Senior I only had one other team member from my school, so we never bothered ouselves with top team scores.
Oh and my senior year I placed 1st in my 5A district (took the TT-1 test you can find on texasmath.org under the TTseries tests & got a 346). Then for the Regionals I tried a strategy of slowing down a little to eliminate mistakes & ended up making more mistakes and not finishing the test, getting a 279 and 7th place on the TT-3 test, so I did not advance to state. I was in the toughest Region & the 1st & 2nd place guys at my region went 1-2 in state also. However in that year's TMSCA state meet in San Antonio I won 3rd place in 5A with a score of 291.
Also as it turned out, my sister was getting married on the weekend of the State Number Sense finals - so if I had been able to get to state, I would have been forced to choose between a wedding for my sister in Stillwater, OK and a 10 minute Number Sense test in Austin. And I remember thinking before my Regional test, if I advance to state how am I going to tell my sister that I won't be at her wedding because of some 10-MINUTE math test??? Boy that would have been a tough one to pass up...and I'm not sure I could have.
As long as your team gets first place, you advance to regionals or state and are allowed to compete individually. Last year, our number sense team got first in regionals, but i wasnt even in the top 10. I still got to go to state and compete.

I think the rule is on teams that get to advance, the coach has the option of choosing 3 people who are going to be apart of the team, with 1 alternate. However, I am not sure. The other members of your team get to advance individually so it might be that they have to be the 3 members that make up the team. I don't think you will be allowed to compete, just to go and be a backup in case something drastic happens. But I am only guessing. It is what seems logical to me.
That is a question to ask your coach. If you see this post, Mr. Ramirez, can you give us a comment on what would probably happen.
