Well,

Someone needs to tell me how the regional competition went.  I am very curious.  Were the tests very difficult?

The regional tests weren't really very difficult.  It was the extreme pressure for me combined with the test that caused such a poor result.  Also, I missed 17 problems.  I missed little things like .25 = 1/4, added an extra 0, missed a sum of the roots, and missed a roman numeral to name a few.  The test was hard for a regional test but not to the extreme.  It followed a similiar path that the district test did.  I know that I just flat out choked.  It was my first regional test ever.  The test was harder than what I suspected, and I think that element of suprise contributed to a poor performance.

Believe me, I know about choking.  And relax!!!!! You are way ahead of where I was when I was a sophomore.  When I was a freshman I was placed as an alternate on the NS team and would have gone to Regionals because I scored higher than all but one of my teammates.  When I was a sophmore, I didn't really work that hard on NS because I was involved in boy scouts, football, basketball, baseball, track, band, plus all the UIL Events, like calculator, math, computer science, science, NS, and C-X debate.  I was way too overloaded to care about anything.  When I was a junior was when I started getting serious about what I was doing.  I dropped over half of the above things to focus on the things I enjoyed most.  So I started working on NS more.  When I was a junior I could finally get to the 4th column but I couldn't finish a test.  So the summer of my junior year I worked and worked and worked on NS till I could finish the tests.  I did well my senior year and actually won state.  So you see, you are way ahead of where I was.  So just keep doing what you are doing.  Both of you have it in you to do well.

Good luck at state Sam, and enjoy Austin.

LOL.  I guess you are on right now.

I really liked calculator.  I could score anywhere from a 220 - 270 depending if I was having a good day.  It wasn't my favorite or my best event, but I dare say I snagged 1st once in awhile.

Hey.  What about my website.  If you want the NS tests for D1 and D2, you can get ONLY the NS tests here.  I don't like sifting through all of those tests, so I extracted the NS tests.

did you use those RPN HPs back then? It'd really amaze me if you say you scored a 270 with a TI(although i've seen some ppl score over 200 with a TI, but that's...crazy). btw, did you know that they are changing the calc test next year so there are less number punching problems and more geometry?

Hahahahaha!!!!!

How old do you think I am Quincy.  Of course not.  I had my good ole trust HP32SII that is so hard to find now.  And yes, I did hear that.  Man, I would give anything to become a coach at a high school.

BTW, I just found out yesterday that my school doesn't want me back next year.......Which means I will be coming back home for the summer.  Sometime around July.  So I might get my wish and become a coach afterall.  If not though, I will continue being an online coach.  I like that idea.

I will stay in the US for awhile for sure.  More than likely the Georgetown area.  I really really like China, so we (my wife and I) will more than likely come back to stay for a more permanent basis eventually, but there are a lot of things we have to take care of first, so it will be a few years before we can come back.

You are still welcome to come over here any day until we leave.  We have close to a month if you are up to it.

that's cool, a month should be enough, hope you can get the job you want, but don't coach 5A schools though, because we'll be in 5A next year(lol). And just out of curiosity, does your wife speaks Chinese?

My wife can follow an intermediate conversation.

Don't worry.  I don't think any high school would want to hire me.  I don't have a teaching degree and I have no teaching experience (in America of course).  So who would want to hire me?  I have a dual major in math and computer science, and can get endless amounts of reference letters, but without a small certificate that says I can teach, I don't think it will be possible.  Gotta love the school system.  Actually, I know it is good.  I would just like to be a teacher.  I am a really good teacher, and math is something I love.  I would do well as a math teacher.  I might be able to get emergency certified.  That's what I am hoping for.

that's so not right, because you can explain and teach things so well...i so wish you are able to coach at our school...and actually if you live in Georgetown, it is not very very very far away from my school...it's about an hour drive...but i guess u'll be paying alot for all the gasolines....

To answer your question I will be in 4A next year.  I believe Nacogdoches will be in region III.  I also TRULY started to train for number sense this year.  Last year I made a 24 in district.  My main problem is my accuracy during tests.  I was wondering if you did a lot of practice tests the day before the test and the day of the test.  Also, I was wondering what type of tests I should practice.  I was thinking about taking the UIL tests from the previous three years along with all the Larry White tests.  Also, Langris5, I was curious on how you performed during practice tests just to see if I am choking extremely bad.  Good luck in 5A with Harker Heights.  Hopefully we can attend some TMSCA meets together.

i did LOTS OF practice tests, actually, during my spring break, i was averaging 10 tests per day, i did all UIL tests from 1993 to 2003 until the point where i could literally memorize the answers, then i started going all the UIL and Medium level Dr.Numsen tests, so by the beginning of district, i was averaging in the low 200s (that's about 1 month worth of practice "HELL," b4 that i averaged in the 130's), but in district i only scored a 140 something and 109 in regional, and yes i did lots of tests b4 the day of the test, and usually 1 or 2 for warm-up on the day of the test...As for "what kind" of test you should take...i don't know...it's hard to say, but i suggest Medium or TMSCA level after you have done the UIL tests, and by the way, where did you get "Larry White's tests?" i've never heard of it before.

PS: what was your district and regional score?

Good Luck,
Quincy

Larry White is the current test writer of the UIL tests.  By the Larry White tests I mean all of the tests that he has written.  He started last year.  So, the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 UIL tests, and TMSCA STATE tests are written by Larry White.

I made a 182 on district.  Major choke. I got to 76.  But, long story short, my pen ran out before problem 10!  I ran up to the desk and got a pen from the teacher.  He grabbed one out of the community pen can on the teacher's desk.  At regional I scored a 177.  I got to 66 but missed a ton.  On both tests I had way too many front page mistakes.  I need to just calm down and take it slower.  I average 300+ on the UIL Dr. Numsen and 280+ on the Medium.  Both are still increasing, and so is my speed.  I really started doing number sense at the end of January.  I went to my first TMSCA meet and scored an 84.  I trained on average 45 minutes a day until UIL B. From UIL B to March I trained 1:15 hours a day.  From March to present I trained 1:45 hours a day.
