Well, I just now finished the second test. I must say it is going to be slower than the first. Let me know once Zack posts it up, if there are any mistakes on the answer key.
Let me know as to how hard you guys want the test. On a scale of 1-10, I would give test #1 a 4 and this one a 7. I can go harder or easier if you want.
ahh lovely... this ought to be quite funny watching my scores fall exponentially as the summer passes...
meh. itll be good practice.
for the sake of learning, i wouldnt like all the tests to be as easy as the first one. i need a reality check... (but a morale booster test on the side wouldnt be a bad idea... ill go steal one of my brothers jr high tests... :D )
pardon my rambling...
btw, thanks for writing all of these tests just for a bunch of kids. it takes a LOT of time out of your day, i know. i want you to know that it is VERY MUCH appreciated

Thanks for the kind words...I love to help out students who want to learn. I like to think of myself as an online coach. BTW, there is a good chance I will be teaching next year, so maybe you can see me at some of the meets. I would love to be apart of them once more.
If any of you need help on anything in particular, let me know and I will try (assuming I have the time) to create worksheets to help you on any specific problem.
May I politely suggest we call the first test Level 1, and the second test Level 2.
May I also suggest making the third test level 3, which is harder than the State test but easier than Dr. Numsen's HARD test.(I never meant to frustrate you, sir!) Then I suggest we go back to one and complete the 1-2-3 cycle.
I did 77 on the first test and I would consider the test too easy if I could finish it.
Finally, I suggest not asking Aaron how hard it should be.
Hahahaha!!!!! I like that....don't ask Aaron. That's pretty funny!
Are you sure about that? I can make the tests harder, but is there any real need for making the tests harder than anything you would see? If that is what the group decides, I would be more than happy to do it!
But I do at least like the idea of making 3 levels. But before anyone says anything else, take the second test to see the difficulty. It's a little hard for me to judge.
But it's only 7 out of 10 on your scale, so there should be one on the 10. In case you want people from Junior high to take part in the league, you can go ahead and make one on the 1...
The test was more difficult than the last, but it was an accurate test.
I have some questions about the key, mind you, I may be completely off.
#48 You have 173, should be 153?
#61 You have sqrt(3)/3, should be negative?
#64 You have 4/15, I got negative 4/15
#70 You got range of 48094-53156, I got range of (62259-68813)
Maybe?
I also have a couple of questions about tricks.
#35, how do you do that trick faster? (Question: 1/12 + 1/20 + 1/30) Answer: 1/6
#47, Easier way of doing that?..perhaps memorization? (Question: 1 +2^3 +3^3...+10^3)
#57 I always get this backwards, I went 25 + 16, and got 4141, how do you tell which number to use and what's the trick behind it? (Don't know the trick, but caught that one detail where you can square each digits, add, then repeat)(Question: 54^2 + 66^2)(Answer: 7272)
48.) I agree with you. Doing it both ways (adding first or changing, adding, and changing back) you definitely get 153.
61.) No Idea. I skipped this one. I HATE TRIG PROBLEMS!!!! anyway, I do know that it can't be sqrt (3) / 3 because tan in the second quadrant is negative
64.) I agree with you. There's no way you can add a positive value to 4 and get 1/4.
70.) You're right again. The sum is 256, which squared is 65536. You're range is correct.
OK, now on to your questions.
35. There's a trick for numbers in the form 1/(n*(n+1)) + 1/(n+1)(n+2) + 1/(n+2)(n+3). You multiply the numerator, in this case 1, by three, and then the denominator is the second fraction's denominator minus 2. so in that case you get 3 over 18 which reduces to 1/6.
47. When you have a sequence of cubes, all positive, what you do is take the last number, calculate it's triangular number using n(n+1)/2, and then square it. So you get 55, squared is 3025.
51. What you have to do in these ones is arrange them so that if you look at the two inside numbers (4 and 6 the way it's arranged) (6 and 5 backwards) the one on the LEFT should be one greater than the one on the right. ALSO, the outside numbers should add up to 10.
Lol, I know that my explanation of number 51 is confusing, so I tried putting bold words to make it better. haha..
(Without any sarcasm) Wonderful Test, Mr. Jones. You got my score down 24 points!! I made at least 9 stupid mistakes, I missed 10. However... Mr. Jones, What were you going to give us on #36? 15 * 13/14? 14 * 13/15? I can't figure out anything from your answer --- 199/15.
On the answer key, I completely agree with Wes Brown.
And on shortcut, I agree with Vinay. Try this: 1+1/3+1/6+1/10+1/15+1/21+...+1/55.
Hint: (divide every term by 2 and you would get the regular patern.)
#48 - I just got wrong....sorry about that. You are right...it is 153
#61 and #64) They both are negative....just forgot to add the sign
#70) I had intended for the last number to be 29 so it would be 225 squared
Sorry about that...
Good explinations on those questions Vinay!!!
For FHT, I am so sorry about that question #36. Hahahahaha! I never would have noticed!!!! That is hilarious. I meant to put 15 x 15/17. I don't know why I did that. Not only that but it was supposed to be to a mixed number. Although, the way I put is a great way of tricking someone if they are going too fast!!!!
13 is the correct answer. So sorry! I promise to look more closely at the answer key next time.
5 mistakes!!!!! Ouch...It is not good to make a 355 on your own test. BTW, what number did you guys make it to on this one?
Frankly, you did a very good job on #36---I wasted like 3 sec successfully trying to verify its validity; moreover, I wasted like 3 minutes unsuccessfully trying to figure out what you intended to put after I checked the answer key.
I made 280, on the 100-scale is 70, and I didn't even feel like passing...
I was also telling Zack about getting a higher frequency. Say every 5 days a test.(Again, I would never mean to frustrated you, sir!) What dost thou think?
I liked this test a lot better than the other one. I messed up on number 36...haha... I tried using the a * a/b trick...
Anyway, I made a 292. I was so frustrated at the end because I had 15 seconds left to do the last question, and I had memorized all the factorials up to 10, but I forgot 8 9 and 10!
The inradius of the Rt. triangle is (a+b-c)/2, and the perimeter is a+b+c. If you multiply them you'd obtain (a^2 + b^2 - c^2 + 2ab)/2 = ab(by the Pythagorean Thm.) And you are looking for ab/2, so...
Is there a name for this theorem?
292 is very impressive, Vinay. Are you still practicing everyday?
thanks for both of those explanations... they really helped. It's amazing how as I keep going along in this UIL stuff everything seems to come together perfectly, like that formula there.
I am still practicing everyday. After summer ended, my coach said school didn't have money to buy funds for UIL anymore (including next year... wonder where that money's gone... *cough* football). So, I went to the texasmath.org and downloaded all the tests and have been doing approximately one per day... lol.
Hopefully, with all these tests, and all the studying I've been doing, my goal is to get 250+ consecutively by the end of summer. That's what I'll be doing most of the time. Maybe some calculus and comptuer science too.
Yea, yall guys are right. I've went from literally nothing to actually "something" haha, even though my scores still suck. I've practicing about every other day and wow I'm doing better that I thought I'd ever do heh. And I thought Math was easy to improve... Hopefully, I'll be able to score around 250+ also by the time UIL Season swings around.
